Before being a worldwide image, Mulan has undergone evolution from ancient times to the present in the form of ballad, poetry, novel, drama, TV series and movie, mingled with different reinterpretation of each age.This paper attempts to compare Chinese and western cultural values reflected in two movies, Chinese Movie Hua Mulan (1964) produced by Shaw Brothers Ltd., Hong Kong and Disney Movie Mulan (1998). Through analyzing plots, lines, characters, this paper illustrates cultural differences from four perspectives: collectivism and individualism, power distance, feminism and dragon image, revealing the differences not only between Chinese and western culture, but also between ancient and modern ethics. Through literature study and logical analysis, this paper expounds social, historical and ideological causes resulting in these differences. After the elaboration of the causes of the differences and the analysis of the success of Disney movie Mulan, this paper can draw a conclusion that the two movies, under the synergistic effect of multifaceted causes, spark the heterogeneity of a same character, which meanwhile helps improve the understanding of Chinese and western culture, facilitate and enhance the communicatio...
