As we know, the abstracts of scientific papers are the first and most important part to attract readers’ attention. However, the translation of scientific papers is a challenging and complex task, especially when translating from Chinese to English. One of the main reasons is that the structure and organization of scientific abstracts in Chinese are different from those in English.Research Questions:In this study, we aim to investigate the application of two important linguistic features, namely topic-comment structure and topic advancement patterns, in translating abstracts of scientific papers from Chinese to English. Specifically, the following research questions will be addressed:1. How do Chinese scientific abstracts use topic-comment structure as a means of organizing information, and what are the implications for translation?2. How do Chinese scientific abstracts advance their topics in the text, and what are the implications for translation?Methodology:To achieve our research goals, we will conduct a corpus-based study of scientific abstracts written in Chinese and translated into English. A total of 100 abstracts will be collected from various academic disciplines, such as physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. These abstracts will be analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Firstly, we will conduct a statistical analysis of the frequency and distribution of topic-comment structures and topic 精品文档---下载后可任意编辑advancement patterns in the corpus. Secondly, we will conduct a qualitative analysis of a subset of abstracts to explore the strategies and challenges in translating these linguistic features.Expected Outcome:By analyzing the application of topic-comment structure and topic advancement patterns in scientific abstracts, this study aims to provide insights into the translation strategies and challenges associated with these linguistic features. Our findings will be of practical significance for professional translators, language teachers, and researchers interested in cross-cultural communication. Moreover, this study will contribute to the theoretical framework of translational studies, especially in the area of scientific translation.
