附录2 英文原文Characteristics and Sustainable Utilization of Water Resources in Yangtze River Basin Huang Yan, Guo Haijin, Zhang Mingbo Bureau of Hydrology, Changjiang Water Resources Commission, Wuhan, China, 430010 Yangtze River, the largest river in China, has a basin area of 1,800,000 square kilometers with a mainstream river length of over 6,300 kilometers, has 996 billion cubic meters of total water resources. It ranks the third largest of the rivers in the world in terms of length and water quantity. Although its area is less than one-fifth of Chinese territorial area, Yangtze River Basin brings up one-third of population of the whole nation, and produces, creates one-third of food and GDP of the whole nation, respectively. Total freshwater resources, exploitable waterpower resources and inland navigable mileage in Yangtze River Basin account for 36.5%, 48% and 52.5% of those of the whole nation respectively. Yangtze River is a key base of hydropower development in China, a strategically important water-providing region of south-north water transfer allocation of water resources, a “gold waterway” connecting the east, central and west regions and a natural treasury of important commercial fishing resources and rare and precious endangered aquatic wildlife.
