HowtoPreparefortheFutureEmploymentItistruethatseekingajobisgettingmoreandmoredifficultintheincreasinglycompetitivejobmarket.Howtoprepareforthefutureemploymentisahottopicamongcollegestudents.Somebelievethatwemustworkhardtoensureagoodacademicperformanceandtakepart-timejobstoenrichourworkingexperience.Othersarguethattolandajobaftergraduationwehavetoknowsomejobseekingskills,suchaswritinganeffectiveresumewithacoverletterandknowingtheinterviewskills.AsfarasI’mconcerned,firstofall,weneedtofindtheanswerstothefollowingsimplequestions:Whatkindofjobdowewant?Arewequalifiedforit?Andthen,weshouldfindthegapbetweenourqualificationsandjobrequirements.Finally,weneedaplantofillthegap.Whenwearequalifiedforthejob,we’rereadyforfutureemployment.LecturesandDiscussionsThereisaheateddebateovertheadvantageoflecturesanddiscussions,thetwomainstylesofteachinginuniversity.Itiscommonlyacceptedthatlecturescanhelpstudentslearnmoreandquickly.Incontrast,othersholdthatdiscussioncanstimulatethestudentstolearnbythemselves.Thosewhopreferlecturessuggestthatattendingalecturecansaveyourprecioustime.Intheirview,thismethodteachesstudentsthevalueofdisciplineandself-control.However,thoseliketheteachingmethodofdiscussionarguethattheteacherusuallyguidestheclasswithoutdominatingit.Theybelievethatengagementinadiscussionhelpstudentsdeveloptheabilitytoanalyzeandsolveproblems.Inmyopinion,differentmethodshavedifferentadvantages.Comparedwithlectures,Ilikediscussionsbetterbecausediscussionsaremoreflexibleandstudentscandeveloptheirproblem-solvingskillsthroughdiscussionwiththeirclassmatesandtheteachers.SilenceIsNotAlwaysGoldManypeoplebelievethatinthepopularsaying,“Silenceisgold.”becausetheyregardsilenceasameritandbelievethatsilencecanbringthembenefitsandavoidsometroubles.However,ifyoualwayskeepsilent,youwillprobablymissmanygoldenopportunitiesinsteadofobtainingthegoldofsilence.Inthemodernsociety,communicationisvitalforsuccess.Youneedtoexpressyouropinionsandideas,andifyouwantsomething,askforit.Let’stakeapayriseforinstance.Ifyouworkhardandhaveagreatachievement,andyouthinkyoudeserveapayrise,whatwillyoudo?Keepingsilencewouldmakeyourbossbelievethatyouaresatisfiedwithyoursalary,andthusyoumightmisstheopportunityofgettingapayrise.Itisthesamewithpromotion.Fromwhatwehavediscussedabove,weshouldunderstandthat“Silenceisgold.”isnotalwaysrightandyoumightmissalotandgainmuchlessifyoukeepsilentallthetime.OnIncomeSourcesbetweenChineseandAmericanStudentsAsshowninthetable,incomesourcesofChinesestudentsarequitedifferentfromthoseofAmericanstudents.Chinesestudentsgettheirmoneymainlyfromtheirparents,whileAmericanstudentsrelievetheirparents’financialburdenbyearninghalfoftheirmoney.Therearethreereasonsforthedifference.First,differentvaluesproducedifferentattitudestowardfinancialindependence.Second,mostChineseparentsthinkitistheirdutytosupporttheirchildren’seducationandtakingpart-timejobisawasteoftimethatcouldotherwisebeusedforstudy.Bycontrast,inAmerica,manyparentsencouragetheirkidstofinancetheireducation.Finally,onlyafewstudentsinChineseuniversitieshavetheopportunitiestogetscholarship,butinAmericaitisquiteadifferentstory.Inmyopinion,Chinesestudentsneedtoworktogetherwiththeirparentstodeveloptheirself-dependence,dealingwithmoreoftheirownfinancialproblemsbytheirown.AdvantagesofSavingMoneyManypeoplearefortunateenoughtomakemoremoneythantheyimmediately...
