The triode, invented by Lee De Forest in the early part of the last century, was the first electrical amplifier. Built on vacuum tube technology, the triode provided the ability to turn an electrical circuit on or off using current flow. No longer was a mechanical switch needed to control an electrical circuit; voltage could now be used to do it. In the early 1950s, a new technology based on semiconductor construction would replace triodes with transistors, in cases where low-power amplification was needed.
