As a result of increasing globalization, there has been an increase in the need for Shaanxi dialect translation, especially in fields such as business, tourism, and education. However, the translation of Shaanxi dialect poses a challenge due to its unique linguistic features. In this study, we will apply Relevance Theory, a theory of communication developed by cognitive scientists Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson, to analyze the translation of Shaanxi dialect. This study aims to explore how Relevance Theory can provide insights on the translation of Shaanxi dialect and shed light on the challenges and strategies of Shaanxi dialect translation.Literature Review:Relevance Theory proposes that the meaning of an utterance is not directly encoded in the linguistic structure of the sentence, but is constructed by the hearer based on their interpretation of the speaker's communicative intentions. Previous studies have applied Relevance Theory to analyze various aspects of translation, such as the role of context in translation (Nord, 2001), translatability and communicative competence (Yan, 2024), and the translation of humor and irony (Mason, 2024).Research Questions:1. What are the unique linguistic features of Shaanxi dialect and how do they pose challenges for translation?2. How can Relevance Theory be applied in the analysis of Shaanxi dialect translation?3. Data will be collected through literature review and interviews with translators and native speakers of Shaanxi dialect. The analysis will focus on how the principles of Relevance Theory can be applied to overcome the challenges of Shaanxi dialect translation, and identify successful strategies for achieving communicative effectiveness.Expected Results:This study expects to provide a deeper understanding of the translation of Shaanxi dialect from the perspective of Relevance Theory, and to shed light on effective strategies and techniques for Shaanxi dialect translation. It is hoped that this research will contribute to the development of translation theory and practice, especially for under-researched regional dialects such as Shaanxi dialect.
