The traditional sludge treatment methods are not efficient in reducing sludge volume, minimizing the environmental impact, and recovering resources. In recent years, thermal hydrolysis has been widely adopted in sludge treatment due to its effectiveness in sludge reduction, pathogen inactivation, and increasing biogas yield. However, most of the current researches are focused on low- or medium- concentration sludge, while there is still a gap in understanding the thermal hydrolysis of high-concentration sludge.In this project, we propose to conduct an experimental investigation on thermal hydrolysis of high-concentration sludge. The objectives of this research include investigating the effect of different operating conditions, such as reaction temperature, pressure, and reaction time, on the hydrolysis efficiency and biogas production. Moreover, we will also evaluate the microbial safety of the hydrolyzed sludge by monitoring the pathogen reduction during the thermal hydrolysis process. The experimental data will be analyzed using statistical methods to identify the optimal operating conditions for achieving high-efficiency hydrolysis and biogas production.The proposed research will contribute to the understanding of thermal hydrolysis of high-concentration sludge and provide practical guidance for the implementation of this technology in wastewater treatment plants.
