This paper compares the similarities and differences between Chinese and English names by analyzing the research results of predecessors, the cultural history, the formation process and the habits of naming of Chinese and English names. However, the origin of names is similar, closely related to occupation, gender, political economy, religious belief and the family pattern. What is more, the name is mostly placed on the expectations of parents for their children. Under the guidance of translation theories such as Faithfulness, Expressiveness, Elegance (Yan Fu), Functional Equivalence (Nida), and Three-Beauty Theory (Xu Yuanchong), different translation skills of Chinese-English names discussed in this thesis. This paper is divided into three parts. The first part a cultural study of Chinese-English names. The second part is the translation theories and strategies of names. The third part is the lost and gain of the translation of Chinese-English names. This paper analyzes the pros and cons of Chinese-English name translation from the aspects of transliteration, free translation, annotation and so on. Finally, a new translation strategy of Chinese-English names is provided.
