Module2HighlightsofmeyseniorYear-Section1BackgroundReadings素材PartTwoTeachingResourcesSection1BackgroundReadingsforModule2HighlightsofMySeniorYear1.HighSchoolRedCrossClubsAreyouahighschoolstudentinterestedinhelpingothersandmakingyourcommunityabetterplacetolive?StartorjoinanAmericanRedCrossclubatyourschool.RedCrossclubsareateameffort,whereRedCrossunitsandyouthworktogethertomaketheircommunitiesandtheworldabetterplaceandwhereyoungpeopledevelopleadershipskills.ARedCrossclubissponsoredbyamentor,usuallyateacherfromyourschooloraleaderinyourcommunity.Ifyoudonothaveaclubinyourarea,youmaywanttoapproachsomeoneyouthinkistherightpersonforthetaskandseeifheorshewillhelpyougetstarted.Thedifferenttypesofclubsthatyoucouldfromarelistedbelow.●SchoolClubsRedCrossschoolclubsareschool-basedservicegroupthathelptheRedCrossfulfillitshumanitarian(人道主义者)mission.WorkingcloselywiththelocalRedCrossunit,clubmembersparticipateinRedCrossserviceprojectsthatimpacttheircommunityandtheworld.Studentmemberswilldiscovermanynewopportunitiesforself-developmentandbeencouragedtochooseactivitiesthatwillmosteffectivelyfulfillthecommunity’sgreatestneeds.●RedCrossService/ProjectClubsAserviceorprojectcluboperateswithinanotherclubandusesatitleotherthan“RedCrossClub”.MemberscompleteserviceprojectfortheRedCrossandforotherserviceorganizations.●ClubsNotAffiliatedwithSchoolsManyRedCrossclubsaresponsoredbylocalRedCrosschapters.Likeschoolclubs,membersoftheseclubsdevelopleadershipskillsandparticipateinRedCrossserviceprojectsthatimpacttheircommunityandtheworld.2.SecondarySchoolsinEnglandandWalesIntheUK,thereisaslightlydifferenteducationsysteminNorthernIrelandandScotland,butthemajoritiesofpeopleliveinEnglandandWalesandhavethesystemdescribedbelow.Statesecondaryschoolsareoftwotypes:comprehensiveschoolsandgrammarschools.Atownwhichhasa“comprehensive”systemhaschildrenfrom11-16/18goingtothelocalschoolregardlessoftheiracademicability.Atownorruralareawhichstillhastheold“grammar”systemhasanexamat11(the11-plus)toselectthechildrenwiththehighestacademicabilitytogotogrammarschools.Thosewhodon’tgotogrammarschoolgotosecondaryschools(whicharestillusuallycalledcomprehensive,evenifthetop5-10%ofchildrendon’tgothere.)Somegrammarschoolsarestillsingle-sexschools.Childrenhavetogotoschooluntiltheyare16bylaw.At16theytaketheirGeneralCertificateofSecondaryEducationexams(GCSEs)inabout6-10subjects.Iftheypass,theycanstayonatschoolanddo“A”-levelexams(Advancedlevels)whentheyare18.ThisisforpeoplewhowanttogotoUniversityorsomeotherkindoftertiaryeducation.ThesetwoyearsareknownastheSixthForm(6one,and6two)andthestudentsarecalled“sixth-formers”.Typicallystudentstakethreerelatedsubjects(eg.Physics/Chemistry/BiologyorEnglish/French/German).Theyhaveclassesinthesesubjects,butalsofreestudytimewhentheyareexpectedtodoresearchandreadinginthelibraryandstudyrooms.Theyaretreatedmorelikeuniversitystudentsthanschoolstudents.Theyoftenhavetheirowncommonroom,withrelaxedseating,musicandcoffee,teaandsnacksfacilities,andinmanyschoolstheyeitherdon’thavetowearschooluniform,ortheywearamoreinformalversionofit.Sixth-formersarealsoinvolvedintherunningoftheschool,withtheHeadBoy/Girlandprefects,whomanagesomeoftheout-of-classevents,suchassocieties,weekendsaway,dancesanddinners.Thesixthformersarealsolikelytomakeupthemajorityofplayersintheschoolsmainsportsteamsforrugby,football,tennis,andhockeyandsoon.IntheMay/Juneoftheirfinalyeartheytaketheexamsintheirthreesubjects,and,dependingontheirresults,theygoontotertiaryinstitutions.Thereis,however,no“prom(正式舞会)”attheendofthelastyearinschoolasintheUSA.3.DrumMajorettesForcenturies,oneofthemostimpressivepartsofanymilitarygrouphasbeentheband,controlledbytheDrumMajor.Hewasalwaysdressedinasplendiduniformandstoodoutatthefrontofthebandastheymarched,givinginstructionsbyhowheheldhislargemace(权杖,)or“baton(指挥棒)”,andsometimesdoingspectacular(壮观的)throw-and-catchmovementswhilstmarching.InAmericainthelate19thcentury,thiskindofperformancemovedoutofthemilitarydomain,andmarchingbandswereformed,withdrummajors,whoperformedatanylargepublicevent.Increasingly,intheearly20thcentury,thedrummajorbecamefemale,andgainedthename“DrumMajorette”.Thishadobviousappealtothemaleaudience.AfterWorldWarII,thephenomenonblossomed.In1945,theNationalBatonTwirlingAssociationwasformed,whichhelpedthousandsofgirlstoperfecttheirskills.Andalmosteveryschool,communityandtownhaditsowngroupofdrummajoretteswhowouldperformatpublicevents.Inevitably,theideaspreadfromtheJSAthroughouttheworld,sothatnowadaysyoucanfinddrummajorettesmarchingateventsineverycountry,andnationalaninternationalcompetitionseverywhere.Justtype“drummajorettes”intoacomputersearch-enginetoseehowmany!However,drummajorettesandcheerleadersaretwodistincttypesoffemaleactivity.
