何江哈弗大学演讲稿哈弗大学校长2015毕业典礼演讲词thankyou,presidenttorres.welcome,governorpatrick.thankyou,everyone,forbeinghere.the146thannualmeetingoftheharvardalumniassociationatthe364thcommencementofharvarduniversity.it’saparticularpleasuretowelcomeformergovernordevalpatrickofthecollegeclassof1978andtheharvardlawschoolclassof1982.throughouthisdistinguishedcareeringovernment,heforcefullyarguedforthepowerofeducationtotransformlives.nothingmadethatcasemorepersuasivelythanhisownremarkablelife–fromchicago’ssouthsidetothemassachusettsstatehouse.whenhewassworninasgovernor,hetooktheoathofofficewiththemendibible,presentedin1841bytheafricancaptiveswhohadseizedtheslaveshipamistadtothemanwhohadwontheirlegalrighttofreedom,johnquincyadams.governorpatrickcanclaimconnectionwithboththeafricanheritageoftheamistadrebelsandtheinstitutionalrootsoftheirdefender.adams,asyouheardbeforefrompresidenttorres,wasamemberoftheharvardcollegeclassof1787,andwasboththefirstpresidentofthisalumniassociation,andhimselfthesonofanearlieralumnus,johnadams,oftheclassof1755.thatkindofcontinuityacrossthecenturiesisnottheleastofthereasonsthatwecongregatehereeveryspringtorenewandreinforceourtiestothisextraordinaryplace.letmestartbynoticingwhatisbothobviousandcurious:weareheretodaytogether.wearehereinassociation.itisanassociationofmanypeople,andmanygenerations.wecelebrateaconnectionacrosstimeinthesefestivalrites,singingouralmamater,adorningourselvesinmedievalrobestomarkthedeep-rootedtraditionsofharvard,andofuniversitiesmoregenerally.evenintheageoftheonlineandthevirtual,aninstitutionhasbroughtustogether,andbringsusback.第1页共7页wehavealsosung–orratherthemagnificentrenéefleminghassung–“americathebeautiful,”tohonoranotherinstitution,ourdemocraticrepublic,whichthemenandwomenwhosenamesarecarvedinstoneinmemorialchurchrightbehindme–andmemorialhalljustbehindthat–gavetheirlivestoprotectanduphold.whenthefoundersofthemassachusettsbaycolonyarrivedontheseshoresin1630,theycameasdissenters–rejectinginstitutionsoftheirenglishhomeland.butihavealwaysfounditstrikingthathereinthewilderness,wheremeresurvivalwastheforemostchallenge,theysorapidlyfeltcompelledtofoundthisseatoflearningsothatnewengland,inthewordsofwilliamhubbardoftheclassof1642,sothenewengland“mightbesuppliedwithpersonsfittomanagetheaffairsofbothchurchandstate.”church,state,andcollege.threeinstitutionstheydeemedessentialtothismassachusettsexperiment.threeinstitutionstoensurethatthecolonists,asgovernorjohnwinthropurged,couldbe“knittogetherasone”inanewsocietyinabravenewworld.dozensofgenerationshavecomeandgonesincethen,andtheuniversity’sfootprinthasexpandedconsiderablybeyondasmallclusterofwoodenbuildings.butwehaveneverlostfaithinthecapacityofeachgenerationtobuildabettersocietythantheoneitwasborninto.wehaveneverlostfaithinthecapacityofthiscollegetohelpmakethatpossible.asanearlyfounder,thomasshepardputit,wehopetograduateintotheworldpeoplewhoare,inhiswords,“enlargedtowardthecountryandthegoodofit.”yetnow,nearlyfourcenturieslater,wefindourselvesinachallenginghistoricalmoment.howdowe“enlarge”ourgraduatesinawaythatbenefitsothersaswell。shepardspokeofenlarging“toward”–toward,asheputit,“thecountryandthegoodofit.”arewesu第2页共7页cceedingineducatingstudentsorientedtowardthebettermentofothers。orhaveweallbecomesocaught...
