EconomicGrowthAheadandHomeEducationBehindResultedinMoreChineseStudentsChooseStudyingOverseasClass6CandySince2008ChinasurpassedIndiawithmoststudentsstudyingabroad,“overseastudy”hasbecomeasignificanttopic,knownbyyoungChinesestudentsheadingAustralia,U.K.U.S.A.Canada,Singaporeandmoretopursuit“better”education.ThefirstChinesestudenttogooverseaswasbusinessmanYungWingbackin1847whostudiedinYaleUniversityandbelievedthatitwasimportanttounderstandwesternscienceandtechnicalknowledgetostrengthenhiscountry.LateragroupofnavalstudentsweresenttoEuropebyChinesegovernmenttolearnshipbuilding,andafterMeijiRestorationanothergrouptoJapan,becausegovernorshopedthatknowledgethosestudentsbroughtbackwouldhelpmodernizeChina.Inearly20thcenturytherewasaconstantstreamofyoungChineseheadingoverseasandthemostfamousonewasSunYat-sen,firstpresidentandfoundingfatheroftheRepublicofChina.AftertheCulturalRevolutionwhichdiscontinuedoverseastudyprograms,inaspeechin1978,DengXiaopingencouragedChinesestudentstolearnabroad,andsincethenoverseastudyprogramsexpandeddramatically.In2011threehundredandfortythousandChinesewentoverseastostudyandnumberisexpectedtocontinuerisingthisyear(“Chinesestudentsbecomemoreinterestedinstudyingabroad”).Currentstudy-overseasfevergeneratedfromChina’sboomingeconomicgrowth,convenienceandattractionofoverseastudy,andfromtheunsatisfyingqualityofhomeeducation.Originallyjustchildrenofpoliticalelitescouldstudyoverseas,butnowwiththrivingeconomyandrisingglobalstatuefollowed,Chinamakesiteasierforitsordinaryfamiliestosendtheirchildrenabroad.EconomyofChinaistheworld’ssecondlargestbynominalGDPandbypurchasingpowerparityaftertheUnitedStates.Itisalsotheworld'sfastest-growingmajoreconomy,with10%averagegrowthrateoverthepast30yearsthereforeChinesehouseholdslivebetter-offthaneverbefore.AccordingtoarecentreportreleasedbyMycosonoverseastudyprogramsinChina,aneducationdataresearchfirm,nearly90percentof2009Chinesegraduateswhostudiedoverseasarefinanciallydependentontheirparentsorrelatives(“NumberofoverseasChinesestudentsincreases”).Inaspectofregion,richerdistrictssendmorestudentsoverseas,andnearly2percentofgraduatesfromtheYangtzeRiverDeltaregionwentoverseastostudy,whichisthehighestproportioninChina.EconomicgrowthnotonlyenablesChinesestudentsandtheirfamiliestopayforoverseastudytuition,butalsobroadentheirviewtochooseoverseastudy.Withmorefrequentcommunicationaroundtheworldoneconomy,polity,science,technology,artandliterature,aglobalvillageisalsoformingwithhelpofconvenienttraffictransportationandworldwideInternet.ThisinternationalvillagemakesChinesegovernmentmoreawareofthatChinaneedstobepartoftheworldbyjoininginternationaleducationprogramme(RobertaandAlma,179).Asoneoftheoldestandmostwide-rangingorganizations,theUnitedNationsEducational,ScientificandCulturalOrganization(UNESCO)hasbeenactivelyinfluencingeducationpolicymakinginAsia,particularlyinChina.In1980,ChinabegantoworkwiththeUnitedNationsDevelopmentProgramineducationwhichprovidedChinawithmuchneededtechnologyandfinancialassistanceinschoolsanduniversities.GraduatesfromtheseinternationaluniversitiesandcollegesarehighlyappreciatedandmuchfavoredbyemployersbothinChinaandworldbecauseitisknownthatinternationalcollegesprovidebetterandmoresatisfyingeducationquality.Thereforeforsomestudents,theyplantogainimpressivedegreesthatwilladvantagetheminChinesejobmarket,andtherea...
