The study employs both survey and pragmatic experiment methods, and the subjects are Chinese university English learners and non-English-speaking students whose mother tongue is Chinese. The study shows that Chinese university English learners have pragmatic transfer in praise speech responses, as evidenced by the use of response strategies from Chinese in English contexts. At the same time, due to differences in cultural backgrounds, there are also differences in response strategies between English native speakers and non-native speakers. This study aims to provide suggestions for learners in expressing their pragmatic competence and transfer issues in intercultural communication.Keywords: Chinese university English learners; praise speech responses; pragmatic transfer; cultural background.
