For journalists, it is an important tool to vividly convey information, create associations and resonate with the readers. This study aims to explore the metaphorical ability of Chinese news journalists in English, by analyzing the use of metaphorical expressions in front-page news reports of China Daily, a leading English-language newspaper in China.Research Questions:1. How frequent are the uses of metaphorical expressions in China Daily's front-page news reports in English?2. What types of metaphors do Chinese news journalists use in their English-language reports?3. Do Chinese news journalists use metaphors differently in English compared to their use in Chinese news reports?Methodology:The research will employ a qualitative content analysis method, by collecting a sample of front-page news reports of China Daily published in the year 2024. The sample will be selected by identifying the most frequently reported topics and keywords that reflect current events in China and the world. The use of metaphorical expressions in each news report will be identified and classified into conceptual metaphors, structural metaphors, lexical metaphors, and visual metaphors, following the categorization proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and Ruiz de Mendoza (1999). The collected data will be analyzed inductively and crosschecked by a team of coders to ensure the reliability and validity of the analysis.Significance:精品文档---下载后可任意编辑The study will contribute to the understanding of the role of metaphor in journalistic discourse, especially in the context of China's increasing engagement with the world and the efforts of Chinese news media to communicate news and opinions to a global audience.
