However, Chinese English learners often encounter challenges in using reference expressions effectively due to the differences between the Chinese and English languages in terms of reference strategies, grammatical structures, and cultural background. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the use of reference expressions in English narrative discourse by Chinese English learners.Research Questions:1. What types of reference expressions do Chinese English learners use in their English narrative discourse?2. What are the common errors made by Chinese English learners in their use of reference expressions in English narrative discourse?3. What are the factors that influence the use of reference expressions in English narrative discourse by Chinese English learners?Methodology:This study will use a mixed-methods approach to analyze the data collected from 50 Chinese English learners’ narrative essays. The quantitative data will be analyzed using statistical software, while qualitative data will be analyzed using discourse analysis methods. This information can help English learners improve their writing skills and enable English language teachers to develop more effective teaching methods and materials to address these challenges. Additionally, this study can contribute to improving cross-cultural communication between Chinese and English speakers.
