This report summarizes the progress made in the first half of the project, including the theoretical framework, research design, data collection, and preliminary analysis.Theoretical Framework:The study is based on the theoretical framework of prosodic transfer, which suggests that language learners may transfer their native language prosodic patterns to their L2 and thus struggle to acquire L2 prosody. In the case of Chinese learners of English, the supersegmental units in Chinese, such as tone, stress, and intonation, may affect their production and perception of English prosody, leading to foreign accent and communication breakdowns.Research Design:The study involves two tasks: (1) reading aloud a passage in English with varying prosodic patterns, and (2) rating the naturalness of perceived prosodic patterns in English sentences. The participants are 30 Chinese speakers of English at intermediate level who have learned English for at least 3 years. The data are then analyzed using acoustic and statistical methods to examine the differences between Chinese and English prosodic features.Data Collection:The reading task consists of 10 English passages, each with different combinations of stress, intonation, and rhythm.
