Unit5Enjoyingnovels-section2PartOne:TeachingDesignSection2:BackgroundinformationforUnit5Enjoyingnovels1.JaneAustenJaneAusten(December16,1775–July18,1817)wasaprominentEnglishnovelistwhoseworkisconsideredpartoftheWesterncanon.Despitelivingtheshelteredlifeofaspinster,herinsightsintowomen'slivesandhermasteryofformandironymadeherarguablythemostnotedandinfluentialnovelistofherera.2.CharlotteBrontëCharlotteBrontë(April21,1816–March31,1855)wasanEnglishnovelist,theeldestofthetrioofBrontësisterswhosenovelshavebecomeenduringclassicsofEnglishliterature.InMay1846,sheandhertwoyoungersisters,AnneandEmily,publishedajointcollectionofpoetryunderthenamesofCurrer,Ellis,andActonBell,which,however,fellflat.Charlottecontinuedtousethename'CurrerBell'whenpublishingherfirsttwonovels.Hernovelsare:JaneEyre,published1847Shirley,published1849Villette,published1853TheProfessor,originallywrittenbeforeJaneEyreandrejectedbymanypublishinghouses,waseventuallypublishedposthumouslyin18573.AnneBrontëAnneBrontë(January17,1820–May28,1849)wasaBritishauthor,theyoungestofthetriooffamousBrontësisterswhowroteacclaimedVictorianromanticnovelsofmannersandsociety.ShewasborninthevillageofThornton,Yorkshire,England,theyoungestofsixsiblings.Anne'smotherdiedayearlater,afterthefamilyhadmovedtoHaworthwhereherfatherwasperpetualcurate.Muchhasbeensaidabouttheinfluenceofthisdeathonherandhersiblingsandhowitmayhaveaffectedtheirwritings.Twoofhersisters,CharlotteandEmily,werealsoauthorsandpoets.Anne'spoetrywaspublished,alongwiththatofhersisters,in1846,underthepseudonym"ActonBell".Hernovelsare:AgnesGrey,published1847TheTenantofWildfellHall,published1848ShediedattheseasideresortofScarborough,England,whichwasalsothesettingforbothofhernovels.ShewasburiedatSaintMary'sChurchyard,Scarborough.ShehadbeeninScarboroughforonlyafewdays,havingbeensentthereinthehopeofcuringhertuberculosis—anillnessfromwhichherbrother,BranwellBrontë,andthreeofherfoursistershadalreadydied.4.EmilyJaneBrontëEmilyJaneBrontë(July30,1818–December19,1848)wasaBritishnovelistandpoet,bestrememberedforheronesinglenovelWutheringHeights,whichisnowanacknowledged用心爱心专心116号编辑classicofEnglishliterature.Emilywasthesecond(andsomewouldsaythefinestwriter)amongstthefamousBrontësisters.EmilywasbornatThorntoninYorkshire,theyoungersisterofCharlotteBrontëandthefifthofsixchildren.In1820,thefamilymovedtoHaworth,whereEmily'sfatherwasperpetualcurate,anditwasinthesesurroundingsthattheirliterarytalentflourished.Inchildhood,afterthedeathoftheirmother,thethreesistersandtheirbrotherBranwellcreatedimaginarylands(Angria,Gondal,Gaaldine),whichfeaturedinstoriestheywrote.LittleofEmily'sworkfromthisperiodsurvives,exceptforpoemsspokenbycharacters(TheBrontës'WebofChildhood,FannieRatchford,1941).In1838,EmilycommencedworkasagovernessatMissPatchett'sLadiesAcademyatLawHillHall,nearHalifax.Later,withhersisterCharlotte,sheattendedaprivateschoolinBrussels.ItwasthediscoveryofEmily'spoetictalentbyherfamilythatledherandhersisters,CharlotteandAnne,topublishajointcollectionoftheirpoetryin1846.Owingtotheprejudicesonfemalewriters,allthreeusedmalepseudonyms,Emily'sbeing"EllisBell".Shesubsequentlypublishedheronlynovel,WutheringHeights,in1847-apowerful,poeticwork,butwhoseinnovativestructuresomewhatpuzzledcritics.Althoughitreceivedmixedreviewswhenitfirstcameout,thebooksubsequentlybecameanEnglishlite...
