In this context, writing academic papers that are understandable and attractive to the international audience has become a pressing issue for scholars and researchers. Abstracts, as one of the key elements of academic papers, function as a brief summary of the main content and findings. As such, they not only serve as a basis for readers to decide whether to read the entire paper or not, but also as a way to represent the paper's quality and significance. Therefore, analyzing the genre of English abstracts in Chinese and foreign linguistic academic papers has important theoretical and practical implications for both academia and language education.Research Questions:This study aims to answer the following research questions:1. What are the similarities and differences between the genre features of Chinese and foreign linguistic academic papers' English abstracts?2. What linguistic and rhetorical strategies do Chinese and foreign linguistic scholars employ in their English abstracts to convey their main message and argument?3. What factors may influence the genre of English abstracts in Chinese and foreign linguistic academic papers, such as cultural background, disciplinary norms, and audience expectation?Methodology:This study will adopt a qualitative research approach. A corpus of Chinese and foreign linguistic academic papers will be collected, and their English abstracts will be analyzed from 精品文档---下载后可任意编辑three perspectives: discourse structure, lexical choice, and rhetorical strategies. The data will be analyzed using the genre analysis framework and the Systemic Functional Linguistics approach. By comparing and contrasting the genre features of Chinese and foreign linguistic academic papers' English abstracts, this study aims to identify the similarities and differences and explore the factors that may contribute to these differences.Expected Outcomes:It is expected that this study will contribute to the understanding of the genre of English abstracts in Chinese and foreign linguistic academic papers. By analyzing the linguistic and rhetorical strategies employed, this study will shed light on how scholars can effectively convey their main message and argument in English abstracts. Moreover, this study may provide practical guidance for language education and academic writing.
