They will be asked to engage in spontaneous conversation with a Chinese-speaking interlocutor while being recorded. The data collected will be transcribed and analyzed for the use of discourse markers. The data will also be analyzed to identify common errors made by the participants.Significance:The study will provide insights into the challenges that English native speakers face when acquiring and using Chinese in spoken communication. The findings will advance our understanding of how discourse markers function in Chinese conversation and the strategies that can be employed to enhance communicative competence.
