Table manner is an essential part of cross-cultural communication. However, table manners are different in China and France because of different cultures and backgrounds. If people don’t clearly know about differences of Chinese and French table manners, it’s easy for two sides to lead to cultural conflicts and misunderstandings when they do business with each other. Although now there are many studies for differences between Chinese and Western table manners, there are few studies of differences of table manners between China and France.This paper attempts to have a comparative study for differences between Chinese and French table manners. The thesis introduces the origin and development of table manners between China and France, and compares the differences of table manners from two aspects of pre dinner manners and dining manners, including choices of dining tables, seating arrangements, order of meals, placements of tableware, dining modes and dining atmosphere. What’s more, the thesis exposes the reasons for the differences and shows some taboos of Chinese and French table manners. The paper will use literature study and logical analysis to provide evidence and references for this study’s findings.
