IntroductionThe definition of sexism in Oxford Advanced Learner's English Chinese Dictionary (the 7th edition) is “the unfair treatment of people, especially women, because of their sex.” And the definition of sex discrimination given by it is “the act of treating men and women differently in an unfair way.” (Hornby 1827) Therefore, on the language, sexism usually refers to the language sex discrimination against women.The sexism is derived from Bible which introduces the origin of the first man and woman in the world. According to Jerusalem Bible, God first made Adam who is similar to God in gender, then took off a rib from Adam to make Eva as the accompanier of Adam because Adam was alone. (Jones 18:37-38) So, the first woman came to the world and the gender discrimination against women began. The word woman originally is wifeman that means ‘the wife of man’. In other words, woman is “a compound of womb and man”. (Li 373) Both Bible and Etymology show the common idea that women are just men's accessories, and thus men usually enjoy higher status than women.The sexism is quite common both in old ages and today. Although in the name of the freedom, right, equality, love, etc., some western countries still exist sexism. Frankly speaking, sexism exists almost everywhere.
