Module 5 A Trip Along the Three GorgesDo you like travelling? My answer is yes. Through travelling we can enjoy beautiful views and broaden our horizons. Though at somespotswe may sometimesbe ripped offby the local people, we can still get a kick out of it. Because the Three Gorges is being exploited to build the dam, some of its sites will disappear. This summer, I together with one of my colleagues went on a cruise to the Three Gorges by a goods ship. At the dock, we got on the ship and sailed downstreamthrough a hilly region. At the steep edge of the hills, there were some temples surrounded by trees. Because smoking wasforbiddenin the cabins, we went to the deck to smoke. Meanwhile, we could enjoy a beautiful scenery. We could see some fishermenin the distance. We first went through the Qutang Gorge, which narrows to 350 feet. At Wushan we made a detour to see some smaller gorges. Then we went through Wu Gorge and Xiling Gorge. The Yangtze Riverwas heavy with legends.At the lounge, the guide told us her hometown was in aremote village and it would take her at least a week to go back home. She also told us there is immense mountainous land on both banks of Yangtze River with only small areas of flat plains. The land isn'tfertile, so people along it make a living by fishing or tourism.
