AbstractThe legendary story of Hua Mulan was known well by Chinese people. Hua Mulan disguised herself as a man, in order to substitute for her father to service in the army. As a heroine, she is a good example in the eyes of Chinese women who were restrained by feudal society in ancient times. And her story has been transferred from generation to generation. In 1998, the film Mulan, which was adapted from the Ballad of Mulan of China, was produced by Disney Company. Its director pooled wisdom and formed synergy, and took the main set of Chinese cultures, meanwhile, intermingled with America cultures, to cater to different people’s tastes in different cultural backgrounds. The essay uses Feminist Literary Criticism theory, comparing the image of Hua Mulan in both the Ballad of Mulan and Disney’s Mulan, taking marriage concepts and cultural values as main points, to conclude the different social role of females between China and America.
