CLASSROOMFIRESAFETYNFPA-101,LIFESAFETYCODE,2003EDITIONChapter15ExistingSchoolsSCHOOLFIRES•FACTS•Approximately7600reportedfiresoccurinschools•Responsiblefor125injuries,5deathsand$50.1millioninfirelossannually•Leadingcauseofschoolfiresisincendiary/suspicious•90%ofschoolfiresoccurduringtheschoolweek•70%ofschoolfiresoccurbetweenthehoursof8AMand4PMHelpPreventSchoolTragedies•ByfollowingthesestepsyoucanhelpustoreduceschoolfiresandlimitthedamagecausedbyschoolfiresInspections•Teachersandprincipalsshouldinspectallexitfacilitiesdailytoensurethatallstairways,doorsandotherexitsareinpropercondition.•Particularattentionshouldbegivento:–Keepingalldoorsunlocked.–Keepingdoorsthatservetoprotectthesafetyofpathsofegressclosedandundernoconditionsblockedopen,suchasdoorsonstairwayenclosures.–Keepingoutsidestairsfreefromallobstructionsandclearoficeandsnow.EmergencyPlans•ShallInclude:–(1)Proceduresforreportingofemergencies–(2)Occupantandstaffresponsetoemergencies–(3)Designandconductoffiredrills–(4)Typeandcoverageofbuildingfireprotectionsystems.Emergencyplansshallbereviewedandupdatedasrequired.EmergencyEgressandRelocationDrills•Emergencyegressandrelocationdrillsshallbeconductedasfollows:–(1)Notlessthanoneemergency-egressandrelocationdrillshallbeconductedeverymonththefacilityisinsessionunlessbothofthefollowingcriteriaaremet:•a)Inclimateswheretheweatherissevere,themonthlyemergencyegressandrelocationdrillsshallbepermittedtobedeferred.•(b)Therequirednumberofemergencyegressandrelocationdrillsshallbeconducted,andnotlessthanfourshallbeconductedbeforethedrillsaredeferred.–(2)Alloccupantsofthebuildingshallparticipateinthedrill.–(3)Oneadditionalemergencyegressandrelocationdrill,otherthanforeducationaloccupanciesthatareopenonayear-roundbasis,shallberequiredwithinthefirst30daysofoperation.•Allemergencyandrelocationdrillalarmsshallbesoundedonthefirealarmsystem.THINGSTOWATCHFORDURINGDRILL•Everyoneshouldleavethebuildinginanorderlyfashion•Classroomandofficedoorsandwindowsshouldbeclosedtolimitthespreadofsmokeandfire•StudentsandstaffshouldallbeaccountedforFURNISHINGSANDDECORATIONS•Artworkandteachingmaterialsshallbepermittedtobeattacheddirectlytothewallsbutshallnotexceed20%ofthewallareainbuildingsnotprotectedbyasprinklersystem.•Itisadvantageousnotonlytolimitthequantityofart-workdisplayedbutalsotoavoidplacingsuchmaterialsneararoom’sexitaccessdoors.Sincethecombustibilityoftheartworkcannotbeeffectivelycontrolled,thequantityintermsofthepercentageofwallareacovered,isregulatedtoavoidcreatingacontinuouscombustiblesurfacethatwillspreadflameacrosstheroom.DRAPERIESANDCURTAINS•Draperies,curtains,andothersimilarfurnishingsanddecorationsineducationaloccupanciesshallbeinaccordancewiththeprovisionsof10.3.1.•WhererequiredbytheapplicableprovisionsofthisCode,draperies,curtains,andothersimilarlooselyhangingfurnishingsanddecorationsshallbeflameresistantasdemonstratedbytestinginaccordancewithNFPA701,StandardMethodsofFireTestsforFlamePropagationofTextilesandFilms.CLOTHINGANDPERSONALEFFECTS•Clothingandpersonaleffectsshallnotbestoredincorridors,unlessotherwisepermittedbythefollowing:–(1)ThisrequirementshallnotapplytocorridorsprotectedbyanautomaticsprinklersysteminaccordancewithSection9.7.–(2)ThisrequirementshallnotapplytocorridorareasprotectedbyasmokedetectionsysteminaccordancewithSection9.6.–(3)Thisrequirementshallnotapplytostorageinmetallockers,providedthattherequiredegresswidthismaintained.DOORCHOCKS•Shallonlybeusedtoholdadooropentemporarily•ifadoorneedstobeheldopenonalongtermbasis,magneticholdopendevicesshouldbeinstalled•Ifdoorscontinuetobefoundchockedopenwereservetherighttoremovethedoorchocks.•BychockingdoorsopenwhenafireoccursthefirewillgrowandspreadrapidlyoutoftheclassroomdoorQuestions?
