Since the early 20th century, researchers have proposed multiple theories to account for the mechanisms of vocabulary learning. Among these theories, the output hypothesis proposed by Swain in 1985 has gained much attention among SLA researchers. The output hypothesis suggests that language learners' output production is a vital facilitator in vocabulary acquisition. It assumes that learners can acquire new vocabulary through generating and using it in communicative situations. However, the generalizability and efficacy of the output hypothesis in English vocabulary acquisition are still inconclusive, especially in the second language (L2) classroom settings. Research Questions:This study will focus on exploring the following research questions: 1. Does the output hypothesis have generalizability in English vocabulary acquisition for L2 learners? 2. Is the output hypothesis an effective approach to teaching English vocabulary in L2 classroom settings? Methodology:To validate the output hypothesis in English vocabulary acquisition, this study will adopt a mixed-methods approach that incorporates quantitative and qualitative methods. 1. Quantitative: A vocabulary test will be administered to a group of L2 learners before and after the treatment. The treatment will be a teaching intervention that emphasizes output practice in English vocabulary learning. The comparison of the pre-test and post-test vocabulary scores...
