Therefore, mastering English is essential for high school students, who are the backbone of the nation's future. However, traditional classroom teaching often fails to meet the diverse needs and interests of different students. Consequently, the self-directed learning of English has become increasingly popular among high school students. However, there are still significant problems to overcome in the process of self-directed English learning.ObjectivesThe main objectives of this research project are to identify the major problems encountered by high school students in their self-directed English learning and to propose effective strategies to address these issues. The study aims to provide practical guidance for teachers, parents, and students to improve the quality of English education.MethodologyThe research will employ a mixed-methods approach to collect data. A survey will be conducted to assess the current status of self-directed English learning among high school students. A questionnaire will be designed to gather information on students' motivation, learning strategies, resources, difficulties, and effectiveness of English learning. Semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions will be conducted to obtain more in-depth data on specific issues identified from the survey. The study will involve a sample of 200 high school students from different regions, schools, and backgrounds in China.Expected OutcomesThe study is expected to reveal the major challenges faced by high school students in their self-directed English learning, including lack of motivation, ineffective learning strategies, limited access to resources, low self-efficacy, and insufficient support and guidance. Based on the data collected, several strategies will be proposed to support students' self-directed English learning, including enhancing motivation, developing appropriate learning strategies, providing diverse resources, promoting self-efficacy, and building a supportive learning environment.ConclusionThis research project is significant in providing insights into the current status of self-directed English learning among high school students and identifying effective strategies to optimize their English learning outcomes. The study will contribute to enhancing the quality of English education and promoting students' global competitiveness.
