Firstly, the concept and characteristics of high in-situ stress are introduced, and the influence of high in-situ stress on rock failure is analyzed. Then, a mechanical analysis-based unloading failure mechanism of rocks is proposed and numerically simulated and experimentally validated. Finally, the prospect and research direction of the mechanism in underground mining and geotechnical engineering are discussed. This study can provide theoretical support and practical guidance for relevant engineering and scientific research.Keywords: high in-situ stress; rock unloading; failure mechanism; numerical simulation; experimental validation
