1IntroductionThe vector control, also known as the field-oriented control(FOC), of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) isthe algorithm often used in today’s advanced motor controldrives. Such advanced motor control algorithms require thesetting of motor electrical parameters for its properfunctionality. This application note deals with themeasurement of electrical parameters needed for vectorcontrol of PMSM. The electrical parameters are needed to setthe current PI controller gains to get the desired closed-loopperformance and for BEMF observer constants. The proposedmeasurement techniques determine a number of pole pairs, astator resistance, synchronous inductances, and an electricalconstant with common measurement equipment. A summaryof PMSM sensorless control and explanation of motor controlterms can be found in [1 ].2Motor parameters neededfor PMSM FOCOne of the possible methods to set the PI controller gains, is tocalculate them from motor parameters. The current PIcontroller gains in time domain are calculated from the motorelectrical parameters [1 ]; see the following equations.Freescale SemiconductorDocument Number:AN4680Application NoteRev. 0, 02/2013PMSM Electrical ParametersMeasurementby:Viktor Bobek© 2013 Freescale Semiconductor, Inc.Contents1Introduction................................................................12Motor parameters needed for PMSM FOC...............13Motor pole pairs........................................................33.1Background.....................................................33.2Guide.............................................................34Stator resistance.........................................................54.1Background.....................................................54.2Guide.......................................................
