趣谈数字由于在英语里，数字常常单独出现，而不像汉语里后面总跟有名词，所以有时会很难分辨数字所指的是什么。例如： A boy of six eleven, he had just turned seventeen when the coach took him in the provincial eleven. 一个六英尺十一英寸的男孩子，在刚满十七岁时被教练选到省足球队。 第一组数字 six eleven 指的是身高，第二个数字指年龄，第三个数字 eleven 则是因为足球比赛每一方上场队员是十一名，所以代指足球队，国家队可以叫做 the national eleven。九人一组的棒球队则叫做 the nine，比如：the Tiger nine（老虎棒球队）。 He did not turn up until the eleventh hour. 他直到最后一刻才出现。 这句话里的 the eleventh hour 虽然是数词加名词的结构，但却不能直译为十一点，这条成语的意思是"最后时刻"。英语中有时用数字来表示人的身体部位体态。 He crawled on all fours to a nearby village. 他手脚并用，爬到了邻近的村子。 复数形式的 four 在这里指代人的四肢。而 Instead of chopsticks he simply uses his bunch of five. 他不用筷子，而用手抓著吃。 这里的 bunch of five 则是指人手的五个手指。 说一个人 five by five 是说他的身高横竖都是五英尺，即汉语里的"五短身材"。常听到人们说 go fifty-fifty，意思是平分，也可以说 go half-half，即汉语里讲的"二一添作五"；而 'We'll go by six by six.'，"six by six"是指一种六轮汽车。 Seven times seven did I take council with my soul. 我一而再，再而三地扪心自问。 这里的"七乘七"，既不是说身高，也不是汽车，而是指多次扪心自问。 在汉语里我们说"三思而后行"；用英语说，三则便成了二：Think twice before you leap.； 三心二意是：be in two minds； 用心 爱心 专心 乱七八糟是：at sixes and sevens， 如： There's a regular shindy in the house: and everything at sixes and sevens. 屋里乱极了，一切都是乱七八糟的。 十全十美是 to the nines，如： The whole family were dressed up to the nines when they left for the wedding. 全家人都身著盛装去参加婚礼。 十之八九则是 ten to one，如： Ten to one he has forgotten it. 他很可能已经忘了。用心 爱心 专心
