Unit3Tomorrow’sWorldH.G.WellsH.G.Wellsisconsideredbysometobethefatherofmodernsciencefiction.BiographyHerbertGeorgeWellswasbornin1866inBromley,Kent.Hiscareerasanauthorwasfosteredbyanunfortunateaccidentasachild.Hebrokehislegandspentthemandatoryrestperiodreadingeverybookwhichhecouldfind.WellswasawardedascholarshipandfurtheredhiseducationattheNormalSchoolofScienceinLondon.ItwasattheNormalSchoolthatWellscameunderthewingofthefamousbiologistThomasH.Huxley.Wells'"sciencefiction"(althoughhenevercalleditsuch)wasclearlyinfluencedbyhisstudiesattheNormalSchoolandhisinterestinbiology.H.G.Wellsgainedfamewithhisfirstmajorfictionwork:TheTimeMachinein1895.Soonafterthepublicationofthisbook,WellsfollowedwithTheIslandofDr.Moreau(1895),TheInvisibleMan(1897),andperhapshismostfamouspopularwork:TheWaroftheWorlds(1898).OvertheyearsWellsbecameconcernedwiththefateofhumansocietyinaworldwheretechnologyandscientificstudywereadvancingatarapidpace.ForaperiodhewasamemberofTheFabianSociety,agroupofsocialphilosophersinLondon.Wells'slaterworksbecamelesssciencefictionandmoresocialcritique.Theaccuracyofthe"science"inWells'sworkhasoftenbeencalledintoquestion.ItisrumoredthatWellsandtheFrenchnovelistJulesVerneactuallycriticizedeachother'swriting.Wells'sclaimwasthat"Vernecouldn'twritehimselfoutofapapersack"andVerneaccusedWellsofhaving"scientificallyimplausibleideas."Thesciencemaynotbeaccurate,buttheadventureandphilosophyinthosebooksmakesWells'earlysciencefictionfunandfascinatingtoread.ThemajorworksofH.G.WellsTheInvisibleManTheWaroftheWorldsTheIslandofDoctorMoreauTheTimeMachineTheFirstMenintheMoon
