1 Introdu ction Gone with the wind has been hailed as a triumph of American literature. Scarlett is the protagonist of the novel. She is the daughter of Tara’s master. She is not beautiful but very charming. Scarlett inherited her aptitude for math from her mother and her strong will from her father. In her whole life, she only wants two things, one is Ashley and the other is Tara. She would do everything to help Ashley and to protect Tara. But after Melanie’s death, Scarlett came to her sense and found that the one she really loved is Rhett. But Rhett has leaved her. She said to herself: tomorrow is another day and want to get him back. The novel depicts a picture of the social life of the south of America and describes the change of the America during and after the civil war. Under this background, Scarlett changed from spoiled teenager to hard-working widow to wealthy opportunist. Every coin has its two sides, Scarlett is only human and not perfect, and she has her own advantages and disadvantages. She is self-centered, selfish and pragmatic. However she is brave, energetic and realistic, and sometimes she showed her kindness. As far as I’m concerned, it’s her complicated character helps her acclimatize herself to the social environment and makes her a successful woman.
