In vitro gas production technique was adopted to simulate the rumen environment using rumen fluid samples and feedstuffs of different ratios, and the gas production, volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration and microbial population were analyzed. The results showed that the different roughage-to-concentrate ratios had significant effects on rumen fermentation of milk goats. The feedstuffs with higher roughage-to-concentrate ratios produced more gas and VFAs in the same fermentation time. Moreover, the different roughage-to-concentrate ratios also had influence on microbial population, especially on the number of gram-positive bacteria and fungi in the rumen. Therefore, this study indicates that appropriate roughage-to-concentrate ratios can promote rumen fermentation and balance microbial population of milk goats.Keywords: milk goat, rumen, roughage-to-concentrate ratio, fermentation, microbial population.
