Visiting a British homeThere is a commonly quoted saying in Britain, “an Englishman’s home is his castle”, which sums up the importance we give to our own bit of private (私人的) space. Basically, if you are living in a British home or are invited to go and visit one, the golden rule is to “act thoughtfully”. This means, for example, making sure that you are on time for meals; checking whether it is convenient for you to have a bath, do your laundry, etc; keeping your room clean and tidy; making sure you have a door key if you are going to be late; letting your host know when you are going to be out late; letting your host know where you are going so they can contact you in an emergency (紧急情况). It is also usual to offer to help with household chores, for example, clearing the table and washing up the dishes after a meal, even if you are only visiting informally; and men are expected to offer, too. Your offer may or may not be accepted but at a more formal meal you will almost certainly be turned down. If you’re staying as the guest of a British family or even visiting for one meal, it is customary to take a small gift of flowers, chocolates or something to drink. Don’t spend too much as this could embarrass ( 使窘迫) your host. If you’re staying for several days as a guest, it is usual to give a small present when you leave.Usually you will get on first name terms with people you meet quite naturally and quickly. If you’re unsure, continue to use their family name (surname) and title until they ask you to use their first name.
