Microbial community composition and their activity can be influenced by mineral composition and physiochemical properties. For example, some minerals can act as electron acceptors or donors, providing energy sources for metabolic activities of microorganisms. Mineral surface area and roughness also affect microbial adhesion and colonization. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms of microbial-mineral interactions is crucial for environmental and geobiological research. Objectives:The main objective of this study is to develop an apparatus and method to discriminate microbial selective adsorption on various minerals. The specific objectives are as follows:1. Design and construct a flow chamber for mineral-microbe interaction experiments.2. Select different minerals of varying composition and physiochemical properties.3. Evaluate the adsorption of different microorganisms on selected minerals.4. Analyze the microbial-mineral interactions using microscopy and chemical analysis. Methods:The flow chamber will be designed and fabricated using a 3D printer and assembled with tubing, pumps, and connectors. The chamber will be designed to allow the flow of microbial suspensions over the mineral surface while controlling the rate and pressure of flow. The selected minerals will be characterized for surface area, roughness, mineral 精品文档---下载后可任意编辑composition, and chemical properties using SEM-EDS, XRD, and FTIR. Different microorganisms, includin...
