The aim of this study was to develop an efficient method for chitin extraction and preparation of chitosan from the extracted chitin.After preliminary processing of the larvae, chitin was extracted using an acid/base alternating method. The extracted chitin was extensively characterized by FTIR and UV-Vis to confirm its purity and structure. The extracted chitin was then reacted with sodium gluconate to prepare chitosan. The prepared chitosan was characterized by XRD, FTIR, and TGA to confirm its structure and properties.The results showed that the larvae of Dendrolimus punctatus Walker are a good source of chitin. The extraction method was simple and efficient, and the prepared chitosan had good properties and potential applications in biomedical field.Keywords: Dendrolimus punctatus Walker; chitin; chitosan; extraction; preparation.
