The novel replicates the money-oriented society of the Jazz age and is a true portrayal of the "lost generation" in America. The novel is set on New York City and Long Island in the 1920s. Through the dual narrative perspective, the novel’s character Nick presents a dazzling but vain world to the reader. Romantic love in the novel was the product of consumerism at the jazz era, so it is destined to be a tragedy. Profligate consumerism has gradually degraded people’s spiritual world.
