SustainabledevelopmentSustainabledevelopmentisdefinedasbalancingthefulfillmentofhumanneedswiththeprotectionofthenaturalenvironmentsothattheseneedscanbemetnotonlyinthepresent,butintheindefinitefuture.Thelinkagebetweenenvironmentanddevelopmentwasfirstmadein1980,whentheInternationalUnionfortheConservationofNaturepublishedtheWorldConservationStrategyandusedtheterm"sustainabledevelopment."Theconceptcameintogeneralusagefollowingpublicationofthe1987reportoftheBrundtlandCommission—formally,theWorldCommissiononEnvironmentandDevelopment.SetupbytheUnitedNationsGeneralAssembly,theBrundtlandCommissioncoinedwhatwastobecomethemostoften-quoteddefinitionofsustainabledevelopmentasdevelopmentthat"meetstheneedsofthepresentgenerationwithoutcompromisingtheabilityoffuturegenerationstomeettheirownneeds."Thefieldofsustainabledevelopmentcanbeconceptuallybrokenintofourconstituentparts:environmentalsustainability,economicsustainability,socialsustainabilityandpoliticalsustainability.
