It was here, 37 years ago, that theShanghai Communique opened the door to a new chapterof engagement between our governments and among ourpeople. However, America’s ties to this city -- andto this country -- stretch back further, to the earliestdays of America ’s independence.A different kind ofconnection was made nearly 40 years ago when the frostbetween our countries began to thaw through the simplegame of table tennis.
