This study aimed to investigate the physicochemical properties and antioxidant activity of the extracellular polysaccharides of Pterocladia capillacea. Ultrasonic-assisted extraction and acid hydrolysis were used to prepare the extracellular polysaccharides, and the physicochemical properties were characterized by spectrophotometry, polarized microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and DPPH free radical scavenging assay. The results showed that active extracellular polysaccharides were successfully extracted. The physicochemical properties of extracellular polysaccharides were analyzed, including an average molecular weight of 1.32×106 Da, oxalic acid content of 20.47%, collagen content of 0.29%, and reducing sugar content of 57.50%. The antioxidant activity experiment showed that extracellular polysaccharides have certain free radical scavenging ability. In general, the results of this study provide some data support and scientific basis for in-depth exploration of the biological active ingredients of Pterocladia capillacea.Keywords: Pterocladia capillacea; Extracellular polysaccharides; Physicochemical properties; Antioxidant activity
