However, it is observed that many high school students struggle with the use and comprehension of relative clauses. This study aims to investigate the acquisition of English relative clauses by high school students and identify the difficulties they encounter in using and understanding these structures.Methodology:The study will involve a mixed-method approach using both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A survey will be administered to high school students to estimate their proficiency in using and comprehending relative clauses. A listening comprehension test and a writing task will be given to assess the students' understanding and use of relative clauses in context. Additionally, a focus group discussion will be conducted to explore the students' thoughts and perceptions on the use of relative clauses.Expected results:Based on the survey and test results, it is expected that many high school students have deficiencies in their understanding and use of relative clauses. Factors contributing to these difficulties may include limited exposure to authentic English input and inadequate instruction on the structure and usage of relative clauses. The focus group discussion is expected to provide valuable insights on students' attitudes towards English relative clauses.Implications:This study will contribute to the existing literature on English language acquisition and provide insights for English language teachers on how to effectively teach relative clauses in the high school curriculum. The findings may also have implications for curriculum developers and policy-makers to improve the teaching and learning of English relative clauses.
