Nelson Mandela

NELSON MANDELA 基金会Nelson Mandela is the former President of South Africa and the founder of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1944 and was engaged in resistance against the ruling National Party's apartheid policies since 1948. From 1964 to 1982, he was incarcerated at Robben Island Prison. Mr Mandela is widely accepted as the most significant black leader in South Africa and became a potent symbol of resistance as the anti-apartheid movement gathered strength. He consistently refused to compromise his political position to obtain his freedom. After his release in 1990, Mr Mandela plunged himself wholeheartedly into his life's work, striving to attain the goals he and others had set out almost four decades earlier. In 1991, Mr Mandela was elected President of the ANC and in 1994 he was elected President of South Africa, a position he held until 1999 when he retired from public life. Mr Mandela continues his compassionate and humanitarian work in South Africa and internationally including the work of the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund.
