《Unit7Wherewouldyouliketovisit-卢浮宫》文章素材PhilipAugustushadatallbuildinginfrontofthetownwalls.ItwastoprotecttherightbankofParis;itwasalsodesignedasasymbolofroyalauthority.ItwasCharlesVwho,inthe14thcentury,firsttookupresidenceintheLouvre.Theveryfamousminiaturefromthe“TrèsRichesHeuresduducdeBerry”showstherefurbishmentworkcarriedoutbyRaymondduTemple,theking’sarchitect,inthe1360’s.Thefortressthenaccommodatedtheroyalfamilyanditssuite,eventhoughthepalaceontheIledelaCitéremainedtheofficialresidence.FrançoisIhadthekeepdemolishedin1528andbeganrestoringandrefurbishingthemediaevalfortresstogiveitthepalatialappearanceweseetoday.In1546,FrançoisIcommissionedarchitectPierreLescottorebuildtheroyalresidence.TheLouvrePalacelaidoutforCharlesVwastobereplacedbyabuildingwiththesamedesign,i.e.foursides.ThecarvingsonthefaçadeswerecreatedbyJeanGoujon.ThiswasthefirstexampleofRenaissanceartinParis;itwascontinuedbyHenriIIafterthedeathofFrançoisIandgaverisetothesquarecourtyard(Courcarrée).AftertheGrandGallerycommissionedbyCatherinedeMedicifromLouisMétezeauandAndrouetDuCerceautolinktheLouvreandtheTuileriesPalace(seepage31),itwasLouisXIIIwhocontinuedFrançoisI’sworkbyaddingawingtocounterbalancetheonebuiltbyPierreLescot.LouisXIIIorderedJacquesLemerciertocontinuetheinnercourtyardwhichthenhadonlytwofaçades,onthewestandsouth.Thefoundationstoneofthenewpavilion,theClockPavilion,waslaidon15thJuly1624.1
