1IntroductionSubtitlingtranslationhasundergonetheoreticaldevelopment.Inretrospect,theconstantlyevolvingpracticebothfacilitatesexperienceaccumulationandpresentschallengesthatcallforeffectivesolution.Thesubtitletranslationstudiesbeganwiththedevelopmentoffilmindustry,hightechnologyandglobalization.Asthefilmindustryisunquestionablybetterdevelopedinthewesternworld,especiallyinEuropeandtheUnitedStates,theamountoffilmishugeinEurope,andEuropescholarshavealsodonealotofresearches.Incontrasttodomesticliterarytranslationstudies,theresearchonmoviesubtitletranslationstartsquitelate,buttherearestillafewpioneerresearchworks,however,comparedwiththeresearchesinforeigncountries,therelatedinvestigationsinChinaarefarfrombeingsatisfactory.Notasingleworkcanbefoundthusfar,onlysomelimitedarticlesarepublishedinsomejournals.Generallyspeaking,theseworksaremainlyconcernedwithNida’sfunctionalequivalencetheoryandYanFu’sprinciple.OwingtothefactthatEnglishhasbecomeoneofthemostpopularinternationalLanguages,Englishmoviesaredominatingoverotherforeignmoviesinquantity.However,themajorityofChinesepeoplejustknowalittleEnglishsothattheycannotenjoytheoriginalEnglish2moviesdirectly.Theyhavetowatchtranslatedmoviesincludingdubbedmoviesandsubtitledmovies.Now,withtheimprovementoftheirartistictaste,moreandmoreChineseprefersubtitledmovieswithoriginalsoundtrackstodubbedmovieswhichwillsupplylessaudileenjoymentthantheformer.Asaresult,thesubtitletranslationhasdrawnpeople'sgreaterattentioninrecentyears,andmanytranslatorsareworkingonthemoviesubtitletranslation.Translationisavitalmeansofcross-culturalcommunication,andthereforeitdeservestobeviewedfromtheculturalperspectives.Filmsareamongthemostinfluentialmediainthemodernworld,andeachfilmcarrieswithittheuniquefeaturesofthecultureinwhichitoriginates.Thoseculturalfeaturesarepartlyreflectedbythesubtitledfilm.Itsreceptionbycertainforeignaudienceinthetargetenvironmentanditsaudience'sresponsestothefilmsaretheprocessofcross-culturalcommunication.Whentranslatorsareapproachingthesubtitlingtranslation,theyareobligedtofacilitatethecross-culturalcommunication.Nowadays,peopleconsumemoreaudiovisualtextsthantextsofanyotherkind.Literarytranslationtakesonlyasmallproportionofwholetranslationfamily,andtherearemanyotherformsoftranslationexisting.Asvariousscreentranslationcomesforth,likedubbing,subtitlingandvoice-over,subtitlingisdrawingmoreattentioninourdailylives.3Subtitlingkeepstheoriginalflavortothelargestextentandisaneffectiveandeconomicalmeansofshowingdifferentcultures.Particularly,subtitledfilmsarepreferredbyyoungergenerationwhoaremoreinterestedinwesterncultureandforeignlanguages.TheycanimprovetheirEnglishwiththeaidofsubtitleswhilelisteningtotheoriginalsound.Proceedingfromobservationoftheuniquefeaturesoffilmsubtitlingtranslation,thispaperaimsatadoptingacorrespondingapproachtothestudiesoffilmsubtitlingtranslation.Thispaperprovidesatentativeeffortintofilmsubtitlingtranslation.4Chapter1TheFeaturesofEnglishFilmSubtitlesGottliebcharacterizessubtitlesfromalinguisticandtechnicalperspective:Linguistically:a.Intralingualsubtitles,withthesamelanguage.Boththesubtitlesoflocalprogrammers,subtitledinthesamelanguageforthedeafandhardofhearing,andsubtitlesforpeoplelearninglanguagesfallwithinthisgroup.b.Interlingualsubtitles,betweentwolanguages.Technically:a.Opensubtitles,whichgowiththeoriginalfilmorthet...
