However, many of these students face challenges in acquiring and using English vocabulary effectively. Previous research has suggested that the use of chunking (a method of language learning that emphasizes the use of whole phrases rather than individual words) may be an effective strategy for vocabulary acquisition. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of the chunking approach in helping Chinese students learn and retain English vocabulary.Research Questions1. What are the most effective methods for Chinese students to learn and retain English vocabulary through the use of chunking?Literature ReviewResearch has shown that traditional methods of learning vocabulary, such as memorization and rote learning, are often ineffective in promoting long-term retention of new words (Nation, 2001). In contrast, research on chunking suggests that learners who focus on memorizing common word combinations and expressions may be better equipped to retain and use new vocabulary (Erman & Warren, 2000).Some studies have specifically investigated the use of chunking in the context of English language learning for Chinese students.
