However, many Chinese students struggle with the complex nature of the English language, which includes a large number of homonyms and polysemous words. These students may find it challenging to comprehend the multiple meanings of a word, leading to confusion and misunderstanding in communication. This research project proposes to investigate the English mental lexicon among Chinese students studying English as a second language with a specific focus on the polysemous and homonymous words related to psychology terms. We aim to explore the conceptual representations and cognitive processes involved in understanding these words. The study will use a theoretical framework based on the cognitive linguistics model, which posits that our understanding of meanings is based on conceptual structures, rather than a list of rules. According to this model, words are understood based on their relationship with other words in the language and our experiences, both concrete and abstract, of the world around us.Methodology The research will use both qualitative and quantitative methods. We will conduct a survey amoung undergraduate university students from China's top-tier universities. The survey will be a self-administered questionnaire consisting of two parts.
