The current research on translating polysemous words has primarily focused on the textual context and subjective cognitive processes of translators, neglecting the influence of the cognitive context of the source and target language readers on sense selection. Therefore, this paper intends to explore the sense selection of polysemous words from a reader’s cognitive context perspective.Firstly, this paper will define the concept of polysemous words and its relevance to translation. Then, we will propose a translation strategy based on the cognitive context of the target language readers for resolving the sense selection issue of polysemous words. Based on this strategy, we will analyze several examples to illustrate how the reader’s cognitive context affects sense selection and discuss the elimination of ambiguity and predictability of semantic expression. Finally, this paper will summarize the research findings and propose future research directions.Keywords: polysemous words; sense selection; cognitive context; translation strategy; ambiguity
