Abstract1984 is a political novel written by the British left-wing writer George Orwell. It depicts an imaginary totalitarian society, the ultimate goal of which is power, where people will feel suffocated and scary about the society. The totalitarian society maintains its ruling order through a cult of personality to the leaders and hatred for the enemy both at home and abroad. Although there are language constriction such as Newspeak, mental slavery involving the Thought Police and the totalitarian rule of Big Brother, and some other extreme restrictions on human emotion and nature, the protagonist has always resisted all the injustices he suffered in the society. This thesis will mainly introduce the author, synopsis and viewpoints of the novel 1984, and discuss the destruction and maintenance of Winston’s humanism in accordance with the post-colonialism theory.
