The linguists, w ho study linguistics, say Am erican English has a lot in common w ith British English. That is, the form er is similar to the latter. But in fact they differ in m any w ays. First, they have differences in vocabulary. For exam ple, people get around in London by underground, w hile in New York by subway. Besides, the sam e w ord has a slightly different m eaning, w hich can be confusing. Second, the differences betw een them exist in gram m ar and prepositions. Am ericans use in the team , w hile the British use on the team . Third, there are also differences betw een the tw o varieties in spelling and pronunciation. Compared with British English’ s spelling, Am erican English’ s spelling seem s simpler. The w ork of Noah made a difference, leading to this variation. Noah simplified som e w ords’ spelling and m ade them have a distinctive Am erican look. He w rote a dictionary, introducing lots of new Am erican w ords, pronunciation, use and new spelling. Although British criticised it and w eren’ t in favour of these changes, it rapidly becam e popular am ong Am ericans thanks to Noah’ s attempt.
