Most professional athletes come from non-English-speaking countries and find it challenging to communicate with coaches, sponsors, and fans, especially when competing or traveling internationally. As a result, many sports organizations require their players to have a basic level of English proficiency. However, learning a new language presents multiple difficulties for professional athletes, including the lack of time, motivation, and suitable learning materials. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the challenges that professional athletes face when learning English and suggest effective learning strategies.Literature Review:Previous studies have identified various challenges and obstacles to learning English faced by professional athletes. One of the primary difficulties is a lack of exposure and immersion in the English language, as many athletes spend most of their time training and traveling. Additionally, the lack of suitable learning materials, teachers, and peers, can hinder the learning process. Finally, the motivation to learn English is essential for success, but athletes may struggle to find time for language learning due to their busy training and competition schedules.Methodology:This study aims to employ a mixed-methods approach, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative data. A survey questionnaire will be administered to professional athletes from different sports, nationalities, and English proficiency levels. The questionnaire will focus on their language learning experiences, challenges, and preferences, and will provide valuable insights into the difficulties they face when learning English. Additionally, semi-structured interviews will be conducted with language instructors and sports organizations' representatives to gather in-depth qualitative data and understand their perspectives on effective English learning strategies for professional athletes.Expected Results:This study hopes to identify the major challenges faced by professional athletes when learning English and suggest effective strategies to enhance their language learning experience. The findings of this study will help language instructors and sports organizations develop tailored language learning programs, focusing on the specific needs and preferences of the athletes. Ultimately, this research will contribute to a better understanding of language learning practices in sports and help professional athletes achieve greater success in their future endeavors.
