He had been working on his novel those days but he didn’t finish it.二. 注意区别过去完成进行时与过去进 行时:过去进行时一般是表示在过去某一时刻或某段时间正在进行的动作,它的基本形式是 was/were doing。如:What were you doing at 8:00 last night? I was watching TV when there was a knock at the door.三. 过去完成进行时与过去完成时的区别:过去完成时由"had＋过去分词"构成,表示在过去某一时间或过去某个动作之前就已经完成了的动作或已存在的状态。过去完成时是一个与过去相对应而存在的时态,不能单独使用,一定要有上下文提示或有一个表过去的时间或动作与之相对应。只有表示"过去的过去"时,才能用过去完成时；过去完成进行时表示动作未完成,强调动作的持续性而过去完成时强调动作已完成,着重结果。如:By 3:00 yesterday afternoon we had finished the work.Hardly had he begun to speak when a stranger interrupted him.
